Girls’ Generation formed their first subgroup since debuting in 2007, and the name of the unit was decided as ‘Taetiseo‘, taking the first Korean characters of the three members names Taeyeon,Tiffany, and Seohyun.
In the past, fellow SM Entertainment group Super Junior had named their own subunit ‘K.R.Y‘ taking the first initials of the members, but ‘Taetiseo’ is rather hard to read and pronounce in comparison.
Other girl group subunits had selected bubbly and feminine names for their new teams, such asOrange Caramel (After School), and Pixie (Rainbow), so what is SM’s reasoning behind strangely choosing to name their new subunit ‘Taetiseo’?
It’s because the fans are already highly aware of who each of the Girls’ Generation members are, and there was no reason to give them a different name. Just hearing the name ‘Taetiseo’ would be enough to bring Taeyeon, Tiffany, and Seohyun to mind.
A representative from SM Entertainment remarked, “Girls’ Generation’s subgroup is not a fixed unit, and the members could change depending on the music and concept. Waiting to see which members will form a new unit will become fun for the fans.”
“The members will continue to change and so to prevent the public from becoming confused, we went with a name that combined the first characters of the girls’ names,” SM continued.
Meanwhile, Taetiseo’s mini-album ‘Twinkle‘ will be released all across the globe on April 29th. The medium-tempo funky-soul dance track combines the musical style of Stevie Wonder from the 70′s and 80′s with the more contemporary sounds of today.
